APW121215 version letters: which ones are interchangeable

Most Antminer 19-series machines run on the APW121215. When one fails, the model number and the version letter on its label decide whether a replacement will work. Get it wrong and the machine will not run at best, or the supply burns out at worst.

First, confirm the model: there are three APW12s

Bitmain’s main APW12 models are not interchangeable with each other:

  • APW121215 — 12–15 V output, the supply used on most 19-series machines
  • APW121417 — 14–17 V output, used on the L7 and some S19 models
  • APW12A — the 277 V-input version, for sites in the US and other regions running a 277 V supply

APW121215 versions come in two groups

  • ver a / b / c — no voltage feedback. Interchangeable within the group.
  • ver d / e / f — with voltage feedback. Interchangeable within the group.
  • Across the groups — a ver d, e or f unit can replace some ver a/b/c units after a firmware upgrade. A ver a, b or c unit cannot replace a d, e or f.

So the right question is not whether the letter is higher, but which group the original supply belongs to — and, for a d/e/f unit going into an a/b/c machine, whether that machine’s firmware has been upgraded.

Ver g is a 277 V unit

A supply labelled APW121215g takes 240–277 V input, where the ver f label reads 200–240 V. It belongs with the 277 V supplies, not after ver f in the same line. Use it only on a 277 V supply, and do not treat it as a drop-in for ver a–f on 200–240 V power, or the other way round.

Ver g: input 240–277 V

Both labels read 12–15 V on the main output. The input line is where they differ. Label images: Bitmain Support.

The APW121417 has versions too

The 1417 comes in ver a and ver b. Ver b can replace ver a; ver a cannot replace ver b. Neither is interchangeable with any APW121215, in either direction.

Not sure? Send a photo of the label

The model and version letter are printed on the label on the side of the chassis, along with the input voltage. Attach a photo to your quote request and we will quote the matching model and version, and say so if a firmware upgrade is needed.
